SUMMARY:Inside Baroque Adult Education Class 1: What is Baroque?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for four evenings of listening and discovery as Philharmonia’s program notes annotator Scott Foglesong offers a practical introduction to the music\, the composers\, and the ideas and stories behind it. \nClass 1: Technically\, it’s the musical period from 1600 to about 1750. But that’s just boring dates. Artistically\, it was a glorious effusion of new ideas\, styles\, and genres that reflected two opposing forces—the ostentation of extreme wealth\, and the precision of scientific advancement. Some Baroque works give out a cost-no-object vibe\, whereas other pieces reflect a fascination with precise forms and the careful organization of musical affects. So while it’s the era of Galileo and Newton\, it’s also the era of Monteverdi\, Corelli\, Vivaldi\, Bach\, Handel\, and a host of others. \n\nDates: Wednesdays\, September 16\, 23\, 30\, and October 7 | 6:30–8:00 PMLocation: Community Music Center Mission Campus\, 544 Capp St\, San Francisco\, CA 94110Price: $100 for the full course (four sessions).
