Free for ticket holders\, subscribers\, and donors\, the series is designed to deepen your connection to the music. \nIn this Artist Salon\, Shunske Sato presents a 45-minute lecture and demonstration focusing on Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1\, which he will lead from the violin in Philharmonia’s Kinks and Quirks concerts next month. He’ll trace the roots of Beethoven’s originality to the symphonies of C.P.E. Bach\, whose bold\, unpredictable style shaped a generation of composers—from Mozart\, to Beethoven\, to a teenage Mendelssohn. \nHosted at San José State University’s Center for Beethoven Studies\, this event also offers a rare chance to view highlights from the collection\, including a first edition of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1. \nShunske Sato is a violinist\, conductor\, chamber musician\, soloist\, and teacher. DESCRIPTION:Berkeley Festival & Exhibition \nBy the late 18th century\, the clarinet had come into its own as a fully-fledged instrument capable of great virtuosity\, as well as exquisite tenderness. In this compelling program\, Philharmonia Baroque’s principal clarinetist Thomas Carroll curates a program that showcases the first flowering of the clarinet on period instruments. Stravinsky’s “neo-Baroque” style views Baroque idioms through a modern lens. The rise of historically-informed performance practice that aims to reconstruct\, as far as possible\, the overall sound world of Baroque music as it was\, has also impacted modern composers\, who may well for write for the harpsichord instead of the piano\, or who may explore the sonic possibilities of earlier string\, wind\, and brass instruments.
