SUMMARY:Inside Baroque Adult Education Class 1: What is Baroque?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for four evenings of listening and discovery as Philharmonia’s program notes annotator Scott Foglesong offers a practical introduction to the music\, the composers\, and the ideas and stories behind it. \nClass 1: Technically\, it’s the musical period from 1600 to about 1750. But that’s just boring dates. Artistically\, it was a glorious effusion of new ideas\, styles\, and genres that reflected two opposing forces—the ostentation of extreme wealth\, and the precision of scientific advancement. Some Baroque works give out a cost-no-object vibe\, whereas other pieces reflect a fascination with precise forms and the careful organization of musical affects. So while it’s the era of Galileo and Newton\, it’s also the era of Monteverdi\, Corelli\, Vivaldi\, Bach\, Handel\, and a host of others. \n\nDates: Wednesdays\, September 16\, 23\, 30\, and October 7 | 6:30–8:00 PMLocation: Community Music Center Mission Campus\, 544 Capp St\, San Francisco\, CA 94110Price: $100 for the full course (four sessions). This includes a $20 voucher toward a Philharmonia Baroque concert in the 2026/27 season.* \n\n\n\nENROLL TODAY\n*May not be combined with other discounts or applied to the price of a subscription. Not valid for concerts at Stanford. Exclusions apply.

SUMMARY:Inside Baroque Adult Education Class 2: Orchestral Music
DESCRIPTION:Join us for four evenings of listening and discovery as Philharmonia’s program notes annotator Scott Foglesong offers a practical introduction to the music\, the composers\, and the ideas and stories behind it. \nClass 2: The Baroque Era gave us the orchestra in its earliest incarnations\, thanks to that newfangled invention\, opera\, which required an accompanying ensemble. Baroque orchestral music runs from the refined and elegant (Corelli) to vibrant and innovative (Vivaldi) to profound and heartfelt (Bach) to expertly-crafted and sometimes even spectacular (Handel). \n\nDates: Wednesdays\, September 16\, 23\, 30\, and October 7 | 6:30–8:00 PMLocation: Community Music Center Mission Campus\, 544 Capp St\, San Francisco\, CA 94110Price: $100 for the full course (four sessions). SUMMARY:Inside Baroque Adult Education Class 3: Choral and Vocal Music
DESCRIPTION:Join us for four evenings of listening and discovery as Philharmonia’s program notes annotator Scott Foglesong offers a practical introduction to the music\, the composers\, and the ideas and stories behind it. \nClass 3: Singing may have reached its ultimate peak during the Baroque. Great singers—some of them castrati— combined virtuosity with lyricism. It was a time of eloquent church music\, such as Bach’s cantatas\, oratorios\, and masses. Vivaldi’s abundant church music has been re-discovered only recently\, while French composers such as Lully and Rameau added their own spin to it all. And then there’s Handel— master of the oratorio and the opera\, author of the immortal Messiah. \n\nDates: Wednesdays\, September 16\, 23\, 30\, and October 7 | 6:30–8:00 PMLocation: Community Music Center Mission Campus\, 544 Capp St\, San Francisco\, CA 94110Price: $100 for the full course (four sessions).
