Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale’s annual Winter Gala, held on March 10, 2017, publicly launched PBO’s newest initiative “New Music for Old Instruments” and featured the world premiere of a newly commissioned piece by Pulitzer Prize winning composer, Caroline Shaw, written for and performed by acclaimed soprano Dominique Labelle.
PBO Music Director Nicholas McGegan also honored Ms. Labelle for her extraordinary artistic contributions throughout her career. Dominique is known for her mastery of Handel operas, legendary musicianship and passionate explorations of music from the Baroque to new works. She has worked with some of the world’s most respected conductors and composers, and has appeared in 24 PBO productions since 1994. She most recently partnered with the Orchestra for our April 2017 production of Mendelssohn’s Hymn of Praise to critical acclaim and her breathtaking performance in Handel’s Teseo had crowds cheering in the Bay Area, Lincoln Center and Tanglewood. Her voice has been called “angelic,” “silvery,” and vibrant,” and her performance of the Shaw commission enchanted the Gala audience.
Proceeds from the festive evening supported the Orchestra’s continued artistic and educational endeavors.
