Clogged in the English Vein

Friday August 21, 2020

Our new Music Director Richard Egarr performs Byrd, Blow, and Purcell from his home in Amsterdam!

Seventeenth Century England was a turbulent time and place both politically and musically.  The music Charles I loved was rich and full polyphonic stuff, like eating treacle pudding and scones with clotted-cream at the same time.  When Charles II came back to England from France he tried to get rid of this old thick stuff which was described as “Clogg’d in the the English Vein,” and replace it with lighter more fluffy soufflé-like music which he had come to adore during his sojourn with cousin Louis XIV.  This programme presents some of each for your tastebuds – see which you like better!
