New Music for Old Instruments
Female Composers & the Women Who Bring their Music to Life
October 10, 2o17 | 8 Pm
Nourse Theatre | 275 Hayes Street, San Francisco
As part of Philharmonia’s New Music for Old Instruments, PBO SESSIONS presents an exploration of new music written specifically for period instruments. This remarkable evening brings together today’s star female composers and musicians for rare conversations and performances. Nic McGegan will explore the influence of older music on new works and lead a discussion with composers Caroline Shaw and Sally Beamish with singers Avery Amereau and Julia Doyle with performances of some of the visionary new works by these composers.
Pulitzer Prize winning composer Caroline Shaw has written two pieces for PBO in the past year and collaborates regularly with major orchestras and hip-hop artist Kanye West. Scottish composer and violist Sally Beamish recently composed The Judas Passion, a co-commission of Philharmonia and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (OAE) in London. Avery Amereau is a rising star mezzo who made her Metropolitan Opera debut last year and renowned British soprano Julia Doyle is a specialist in Baroque repertoire.
Don’t miss this fascinating exploration as these talented women perform and share their ideas about New Music for Old Instruments.

WHAT IS PBO SESSIONS
Launched in 2014 to sold out houses, PBO SESSIONS is a direct response to the rapidly changing landscape among major orchestras, and shifts in consumer appetites for classical music. PBO SESSIONS addresses head-on the need to present classical music in a fresh, informative, and casual environment, without ever compromising the quality of the musical experience or the opportunities to learn. The concerts, each one in unique venues, feature major conductors and guest artists, and members of the Orchestra (sometimes Chorale). Shorter than the typical classical concert, audiences enjoy getting to know conductors, musicians, and fellow concert-goers at the complementary wine party after the performance. It is an entirely new concert experience as PBO takes you on a guided tour of works by great composers, complete with multi-media presentations, and dialogue. No experience necessary.
