Baroque Brilliance

A bright, celebratory program for the holiday season, Baroque Brilliance brings festive energy with two virtuosic showpieces for soprano and trumpet at its heart.

You’ll hear brilliance and agility in music by Handel and J.S. Bach, while Telemann’s suite brings scenes from Don Quixote to life, from swagger to slapstick. C.P.E. Bach’s bold cello concerto and a West Coast Premiere by Marianna Martines round out a program that combines grandeur, wit, and drama, all in a festive spirit.

Concert Highlights

  • Handel’s “Let the Bright Seraphim” has been performed at every British coronation since 1902 and most recently at the coronation of King Charles III in 2023.
  • Philharmonia musicians are featured as soloists throughout this program, including William Skeen in C.P.E. Bach’s cello concerto.
  • Telemann’s orchestral suite brings Don Quixote and Sancho Panza to life through rhythm, character, and contrast.
  • Marianna Martines’s motet receives its West Coast Premiere, spotlighting a composer who moved in the same circles as Haydn and Mozart in 18th century Vienna.
  • You’ll hear the music performed on period instruments, bringing you closer to the sound the first audiences would have heard.
