PBO does Haydn’s Symphony No. 91 and Mozart’s “Turkish” Violin Concerto in January

December 15, 2016, San Francisco – Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale kick off the new year with masters Haydn & Mozart in performances throughout the Bay Area January 25-29. PBO music director Nicholas McGegan is considered a leading interpreter of Haydn and will conduct Haydn’s Symphony No. 91 following performances of Gyrowetz’s Symphony Op. 6, No. 3 and Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 “Turkish” featuring PBO violinist Elizabeth Blumenstock on violin.
McGegan has established himself as a leading interpreter of Haydn. He is known to bring out the humor in his music, particularly in the symphonies. He also pays close attention to the little flourishes and details that other conductors may let slip by.
PBO Interim Executive Director Parker Monroe says, “just like a gifted film director who has a penchant for Shakespeare or a pitcher that has a mean curve-ball, [McGegan] has a particular gift for grasping the genius of Haydn.”
That is one of the reasons that McGegan and PBO have done more recordings of the work of Joseph Haydn than any other single composer.
Guest artist Isabelle Faust was originally scheduled to perform Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 “Turkish” with PBO for this set but Ms. Faust had to cancel her engagement earlier this fall. Filling in for Ms. Faust is PBO’s own longtime violinist Elizabeth Blumenstock. A star performer in her own right, Blumenstock will now perform Mozart’s “Turkish” on her 1660 Guarneri. Blumenstock often serves as concertmaster, soloist, or leader at PBO and is involved in many acclaimed period-instrument ensembles, including Musica Pacifica, the Arcadian Academy, American Baroque and Trio Galatea.
Pre- Concert Talks for the Haydn & Mozart program will be conducted by John Prescott and take place 45 minutes before each concert. Prescott holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in musicology from U.C. Berkeley and has taught at U.C. Berkeley and the Crowden School in Berkeley.
