Musical Postcard: Nicolas Altstaedt

Friday February 19, 2021

Described as “one of the cello realm’s most brilliant princes,” Nicolas performs a range of repertoire from early music to contemporary, and plays on both period and modern instruments. He performs regularly with the world’s most renowned orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, and all BBC orchestras.

In parallel with his solo career, Nicolas also serves as artistic director of Haydn-Philharmonie — the orchestra in residence at Esterházy Palace Eisenstadt where Joseph Haydn worked and lived for over 30 years. As a conductor, he works closely with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and other chamber orchestras in Europe.

An outstanding interpreter of contemporary music, Nicolas has worked with prolific living composers including Thomas Adès and Jörg Widmann.

In this musical postcard, Nicolas performs this delightful piece by early Scottish composer Tobias Hume, born sometime around 1569.
