Drawing from Handel’s popular renditions of biblical narratives in the historically ubiquitous format of the oratorio—somewhere between off-stage opera and a secular meditation on the role of the Bible in the age of enlightenment—PBO continues its exploration of key characters, their changing ‘roles’ throughout history, and the hidden relations between the Hebrew Bible, the librettos, and the composer’s blisteringly brilliant music.
