Inside Baroque Adult Education Class 3: Choral and Vocal Music

Wednesday September 30 @ 6:30 pm PDT - 8:00 pm PDT

Join us for four evenings of listening and discovery as Philharmonia’s program notes annotator Scott Foglesong offers a practical introduction to the music, the composers, and the ideas and stories behind it.

Class 3: Singing may have reached its ultimate peak during the Baroque. Great singers—some of them castrati— combined virtuosity with lyricism. It was a time of eloquent church music, such as Bach’s cantatas, oratorios, and masses. Vivaldi’s abundant church music has been re-discovered only recently, while French composers such as Lully and Rameau added their own spin to it all. And then there’s Handel— master of the oratorio and the opera, author of the immortal Messiah.
