Inside Baroque Adult Education Class 4: Baroque and the Now

Wednesday October 7 @ 6:30 pm PDT - 8:00 pm PDT

Join us for four evenings of listening and discovery as Philharmonia’s program notes annotator Scott Foglesong offers a practical introduction to the music, the composers, and the ideas and stories behind it.

Class 4: 20th century composers looked back to the Baroque for inspiration. Stravinsky’s “neo-Baroque” style views Baroque idioms through a modern lens. The rise of historically-informed performance practice that aims to reconstruct, as far as possible, the overall sound world of Baroque music as it was, has also impacted modern composers, who may well for write for the harpsichord instead of the piano, or who may explore the sonic possibilities of earlier string, wind, and brass instruments. The Baroque is very much with us today, as we’ll find out in a session that will include a live performance by members of Philharmonia Baroque!
