In our last JAMOnline event of 2020, we will connect live with Venice, a city where core ideas of the Jews & Music initiative draws major inspiration. Richard Egarr and Francesco Spagnolo will guide us on an exploration of Venetian soundscapes in the holiday season: music from Hanukkah and Christmas, overlapping texts, and melodies that “travelled” from Catholic folklore all the way into the synagogue. They will be joined from Venice by Professor Shaul Bassi (Università Ca’ Foscari), to discuss the cultural legacy of the Venice ghetto into the present day.
