Special Concert: Sessions – The Art of the Oud in Berkeley

Cairo-born, 8-time ARIA-award winner Joseph Tawadros is one of the world’s masters of his chosen instrument, the oud—an Arabic lute-type fretless stringed instrument, the ancestor of the lute, theorbo, and modern guitar.
A virtuoso of diversity and sensitivity, Joseph performs in concert halls worldwide and is known for his brilliant technique, deep musicianship, storytelling and joyous style of performance. For this rare solo performance in the US, Joseph will present a curated SESSIONS program of his own original music. His compositions draw inspiration from the Arabic modal system (maqam) and blend it seamlessly with elements of Baroque music, as well as jazz, world, folk, and even metal and bluegrass.
Ranging from thrilling, furiously paced numbers to beautifully introspective and tranquil pieces, this program is woven together by Joseph’s trademark lyricism and the striking contemporary musicality of his oud.
