Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale (PBO) is sharing news that our current Music Director Richard Egarr has decided to conclude his term at the end of the 2023/24 season. Richard has a young family who are based in Amsterdam. This decision allows him to spend more time conducting in Europe, closer to his family.
“During his time in this role, Richard has had a profound impact. He leaves PBO a vitally energized orchestra with many landmark accomplishments. Under his leadership, we have toured extensively, and received critical praise from esteemed local critics for ‘triumphant’ performances of Handel’s Theodora as well as Handel’s opera Amadigi di Gaula. The orchestra has also continued its explorations of later repertoire, including the romantic era and contemporary compositions. We thank Richard for all he has contributed to PBO and wish him all the best,” said Doug Tanner, President, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale Board of Directors.
“I am extremely proud of my time with the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and all we have achieved, including finding new ways to communicate during the pandemic and attracting and engaging with new audiences, ” said Richard Egarr, Music Director. “I’m thrilled that Valérie Sainte-Agathe, our wonderful new Chorale Director is in place to lead the Chorale and I look forward to capping off my tenure with an outstanding series of programs that includes our October season opener, Garden of Good and Evil, which juxtaposes works by Handel and living composers Errollyn Wallen and Composer in Residence Tarik O’Regan.
A committee will be convened to begin the search for a new Music Director. This committee will include members of the Board and staff, as well as members of the orchestra.
